The Mustangs of Las Colinas: A Symbol of Power & Home Comfort

Lots of people who don’t live in Texas might not know Irving. But if you show them a photo of nine bronze horses running through a creek, kicking up water, they’ll recognize Las Colinas.

The Mustangs of Las Colinas? They’re not just a statue. They’re our town’s icon.

Located in Williams Square, with skyscrapers all around, Robert Glen’s artwork is awesome. It’s the largest horse statue ever. You gotta see it yourself to know how awesome it is though.

The Mustangs feel alive, like they’re really moving. They’re cast in bronze, but somehow they look like they’re galloping. You can almost hear them. The water jets make it appear like they are actually crossing a river.

The Mustangs of Las Colinas: Living with a Legend

The Mustangs of Las Colinas remind us that we live in a place of bold vision. They remind us that nature is powerful and beautiful. They are a destination for the world, right here in our backyard.

You should be proud to live in a city with such an iconic identity. And you should be proud of your home.

Your home is where your personal story happens. It deserves to be protected from the harsh Texas environment with the same level of engineering excellence that went into Williams Square. Don’t settle for an AC system that struggles. Don’t settle for hot rooms and high bills.

Demand power. Demand flow. Demand endurance. At Longhorn, we are the experts in Irving comfort. We know the climate, we know the architecture, and we know how to engineer a solution that works.

Go visit the Mustangs. Feel the energy of the plaza. And then come home to the cool, controlled power of a Longhorn system.

For those of us in Irving, the Mustangs represent freedom and that Texas attitude. They’re a reminder that even in a city, you can still discover some wildness.

There’s also a lesson about the environment.

Check out the Mustangs in July. The sun is crazy hot on the plaza. It’s not exactly comfortable. Now, go inside one of the nearby buildings or the Mustang Museum. It’s a different world. The heat fades away, and it’s comfortable and quiet.

That’s Irving for you. We appreciate nature’s strength, but like being comfy when we are inside. At Longhorn, we believe your house should be the same way: strong and able to stand up to anything, but also a nice place to kick back and relax.

Let’s chat about the story of this well-known thing and find out how its flow and strength ideas can make your house better.

The Masterpiece of Williams Square

To truly appreciate the Mustangs, you need to understand the scale of the ambition behind them. This wasn’t a project about putting a “pretty statue” in a park. This was about creating a legacy.

The Vision of Ben Carpenter

The sculpture was the brainchild of Ben Carpenter, the visionary who turned the family ranch (El Ranchito de Las Colinas) into the city we know today. He wanted a focal point for the Urban Center, something that would capture the heritage of the land. He didn’t want cowboys. He didn’t want oil derricks. He wanted the Mustangs, the wild, free horses that roamed Texas long before the highways were built.

The Art of Robert Glen

The commission went to Kenyan sculptor Robert Glen. He spent years studying the anatomy of horses. If you look closely at the sculpture, the detail is staggering. You can see the veins in their necks. You can see the distinct personality in each of the nine horses, some are leading, some are struggling, some are fierce. They are 1.5 times life size, which gives them that dominating presence. When you stand next to them, you feel small. You feel the weight of the bronze.

The Mustang Museum: A Cool Refuge

Just adjacent to the sculpture (in the East Tower of Williams Square) is the Mustangs of Las Colinas Museum. It is a hidden gem that many locals skip, but they shouldn’t. Inside, you can see the maquettes (small models) Glen made, watch a documentary about the casting process in England, and learn how they shipped these massive beasts to Texas.

The museum also serves a practical purpose: It is a refuge. Williams Square is an open plaza. In the summer, the surface temperature of that granite can reach 120+ degrees. The museum offers a climate controlled escape where you can appreciate the art without suffering the heat stroke.

The Engineering of the Splash

One of the coolest features and the one that connects most to what we do at Longhorn is the water effect. The horses are running through a “stream,” but the stream is paved with granite stones. How do you make it look real? Fluid Dynamics. Small fountains are positioned precisely where the hooves hit the “water.” They fire bursts of water that mimic the splash of a gallop. It’s a brilliant piece of engineering that turns a static object into a dynamic scene. It’s all about controlling the flow to create a feeling.

Unbridled Power vs. Controlled Comfort

This brings us to the reality of living in Irving. We love the “Wild Spirit” of the Mustangs. We love the heat, the sun, and the intensity of Texas. But we do not want that intensity inside our living rooms.

When you drive home from Williams Square, you want your home to feel like the Museum, not the Plaza. You want an environment that is curated, cool, and calm.

However, many homes in Irving suffer from what we call “The Lazy Pony Syndrome.” Your HVAC system is supposed to be a Mustang powerful, robust, and enduring. But instead, it’s weak. It struggles to keep up when the temperature hits 100 degrees. It makes noise. It creates hot spots.

At Longhorn, we specialize in replacing “Lazy Ponies” with systems that have true horsepower. Here is how we apply the engineering principles of the Mustangs to your home comfort.

1. The Principle of Flow (Airflow Dynamics)

The sculpture works because of the water flow. If the jets were clogged or the pressure was low, the “splash” would look pathetic. The illusion would break.

Your home works the same way. Airflow is everything. Many homes in Irving have ductwork that is undersized, kinked, or leaking.

  • The Symptom: You hear the AC running, but the air coming out of the vent feels weak. The bedroom at the end of the hall is always 5 degrees hotter.
  • The Longhorn Solution: We redesign your “stream.” We perform static pressure tests to ensure your ducts are sized correctly to deliver the full capacity of your system. We straighten out the kinks. We seal the leaks. We ensure that the cool air flows powerfully to every corner of your home, just like the water flows across the plaza.

2. Capacity: True Horsepower

The Mustangs are 1.5 times life size for a reason: they needed to dominate the space. In HVAC, “Sizing” is critical. But bigger isn’t always better; Smarter is better.

A standard AC unit runs at one speed: 100%. It’s like a horse that can only gallop or stand still. We install Variable Capacity Inverter Systems.

  • Intelligence: These units can run at 30%, 50%, or 100% capacity depending on the heat load.
  • The Muscle: When you host a 4th of July party and the door keeps opening, the system senses the load and ramps up unleashing its full “Mustang Power” to keep the house cool.
  • The Grace: When the party is over and the sun goes down, it throttles back to a quiet, efficient trot. It’s power is under control.

3. Endurance: Built like Bronze

Robert Glen chose bronze because it lasts. It withstands rain, wind, and time. Your HVAC system sits outside in the brutal Texas elements 24/7/365. It takes a beating. Cheap, “builder grade” units are made with thin metal and plastic parts. They rust. They rattle. They fail after 8-10 years.

The Longhorn Standard: We install equipment built for endurance.

  • Copper and Aluminum Coils: Designed to resist corrosion.
  • Compressor Protection: We install surge protectors and hard start kits to protect the heart of the system from Irving’s electrical storms.
  • Maintenance: Just as the city polishes the Mustangs to keep them shining, we offer maintenance plans to keep your system running at peak efficiency. We wash the coils, check the refrigerant charge, and tighten the electrical connections. We ensure your system is a legacy asset, not a disposable liability.

4. The Aesthetics of Silence

When you look at the Mustangs, they look loud (the visual of galloping), but the plaza itself is often surprisingly peaceful, dominated only by the sound of water. Your AC should be the same. You want the feeling of cold air, but you don’t want the noise of the machine.

Modern inverter systems are whisper quiet. By eliminating the hard “CLUNK” of a compressor turning on and off, we create a background silence that allows you to relax. It’s the difference between a stampede and a gentle breeze.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Where are the Mustangs of Las Colinas located?

The sculpture is located in the center of Williams Square at 5221 N. O’Connor Blvd, Irving, TX 75039. It is easily accessible from the Las Colinas Urban Center station if you are using the DART Orange Line.

Yes, the Mustangs of Las Colinas Museum is free to the public. It is located in the East Tower of Williams Square, adjacent to the sculpture. It’s fantastic (and air conditioned!) place to learn the history of the artist, Robert Glen, and the complex casting process.

A banging or clanking noise usually indicates a loose part inside the compressor or a fan blade hitting debris. It’s a sign that your system is under stress. Unlike the bronze Mustangs, your AC shouldn’t sound like a stampede. Turn it off and call a professional immediately to prevent permanent damage.

Yes, you can walk right across the granite plaza to the water’s edge to see the details of the horses. However, climbing on the sculptures is strictly prohibited to preserve the artwork and for safety reasons. The best photos are often taken from the sides to capture the water splash effect.

Airflow is the vehicle for comfort. You can have the most powerful AC engine in the world, but if your ducts (the road) are too small or blocked, the cold air can’t get to your rooms. Poor airflow causes hot spots, frozen coils, and high energy bills. Proper duct design is just as important as the unit itself.
